138th Independent Tank Regiment

The 138th Independent Tank Regiment ( Russian 138 отдельный танковый полк ) of the Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) was a tank unit of the Cold War . It had the code name "Klorija" and, as an independently operating unit, was formally subordinate to the 2nd Guard Panzer Army in Fürstenberg (Havel) . In 1962 the 5th independent tank brigade ( Russian 5 отдельная танковая бригада ) was set up, and he was commissioned to defend the GDR's Baltic coast . In 1990 it was dissolved.

history

The 5th independent tank brigade was set up in Schwerin in May 1962 as part of the 2nd Guard Panzer Army. In 1964 the brigade moved to Primerwald . The 24th independent tank battalion and the 22nd independent mot rifle battalion were stationed in Primerwald. The 45th and 46th independent tank battalions on the Wustrow peninsula and the 58th independent tank battalion in Garz (Usedom) .

The tank battalions were initially equipped with the T-54 medium tank and the Mot Rifle Battalion with the BTR-152 armored personnel carrier . The association's task was to defend the Baltic coast against possible attacks by NATO forces. In 1974 the brigade owned 130 T-54 main battle tanks.

In 1980 the association was renamed the 138th independent tank regiment and received a new order to support airborne operations on Denmark (Jutland operational direction). The regiment was re-equipped to include T-55 and T-62 battle tanks and BTR-60 armored personnel carriers.

After the threat situation changed in 1989/90, the regiment was disbanded in April 1990. The 24th, 45th and 58th independent tank battalions were relocated to Mongolia , where they were divided into the 12th, 41st and 91st Mot Rifle Divisions. The 46th independent tank battalion and the 22nd independent mot rifle battalion were completely dissolved in the course of this measure.
