The 2nd Army ( Russian 2-я армия ) of the Soviet Union (also 2nd Red Banner Army or 2nd Red Banner Army ) was a major unit of the Red Army before and during the Second World War .

history

The 2nd Army was formed in July 1938. In August 1945, the 2nd Army took part in Operation August Storm as part of the 2nd Far Eastern Front (Army General M. Purkajew ) with the following divisions :

  • 3rd Rifle Division
  • 12th Rifle Division
  • 342nd Rifle Division
  • 345th Rifle Division
  • 355th Rifle Division
  • 396th Rifle Division
  • 101. fortified space

The general Soviet offensive against the Kwantung Army was already underway on August 9, but the 2nd Army did not begin their advance until August 11, 1945. On the left wing and in the middle, the 3rd and 12th Rifle Divisions went together with the 73rd and 74th tank brigades from the Konstantinowka area across the Amur to capture Sunwu and then advance south via Peian to Harbin. On the right wing of the army, the 396th Rifle Division, supported by the 258th Panzer Brigade from Blagoveshchensk , was also supposed to cross the Amur in order to then cross the fortified Sakhali and Aigun area and later advance south towards Nencheng and Qiqihar . The Japanese resistance and the road conditions in Manchuria slowed the advance of the 2nd Army to an average of 20 kilometers per day. The 2nd Army did not reach Qiqihar until August 21, when the connection with the troops of the 36th Army (General Lutschinski ) could be established. During the campaign, the army lost 645 dead, 1,817 wounded and 74 missing and was disbanded that same year.
