The 1st Army ( Russian 1-я армия ) of the Soviet Union (also 1st Red Banner Army or 1st Red Banner Army ) was a large unit of the Red Army. It was set up in 1938 and dissolved in 1959.
history
The Soviet 1st Army was set up in July 1938 under the name 1st Coast Army as part of the Far Eastern Front. The 1st Army was formed from the command of the previous Primorye Group and was responsible for the Ussuri region with its headquarters in Ussuriysk . Large parts of the army were involved in the Battle of Lake Chassan . On September 4, 1938, the army was renamed the 1st Red Banner Army and received control of the Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk and Primorye regions . The army was directly subordinate to the People's Defense Commissariat and also controlled the Pacific Fleet operationally.
- In September 1938, the 1st Red Banner Army comprised the 21st, 22nd, 26th, 32nd, 39th, 40th, 59th, 66th, 92nd and 105th Rifle Divisions as well as the 8th, 22nd and 31st Cavalry Division.
Parts of the 1st Red Banner Army were involved in the Battle of Chalchin Gol in mid-1939 .
During the Second World War , the 1st Red Banner Army secured the far eastern borders of the USSR to fend off an impending Japanese invasion from Manchuria . As part of the 1st Far Eastern Front (Marshal KA Merezkow ), the army took part in Operation Auguststurm from August 9, 1945 .

The troops of the 1st Red Banner Army took part in the conquest of the cities of Mishan , Mudanjiang and Harbin and after the surrender of the Kwantung Army disarmed the last remaining fighting Japanese units. In September 1945 the 1st Army was assigned to the newly formed Transbaikal-Amur military district, the headquarters were relocated to Blagoveshchensk , where they received troops from the disbanded 15th Army and the 2nd Red Banner Army .
