Mauchen (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mauchen is a place in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district that was abandoned in the early modern period .

The place and its fields to the north and partly to the west lay in the north of Unadingen on the left bank of the Mauchach running eastwards , which here already begins to form a kilometer-long spur with the receiving Gauchach , and on the south slope that adjoins the upland. Mauchen was founded in the 11th or 12th century and abandoned in the early 16th century. His district included about 200 ha. Were to place in its heyday around 1320 two Meyerhöfe of the monastery of St. Blaise , a larger yard and twelve small estates of the monastery Friedenweiler. The residents, according to the estimate of the monument preservation after 10 to 15 families, lived from growing grain. On the north-western edge of the village there was a Löffingen branch church , mentioned for the first time in 1418 and last mentioned in 1508, and a mill mentioned last in 1503 in the south-eastern local area downstream.

From 1418 the fields of the community were increasingly cultivated by Unadinger farmers. This indicates a slow decline of the place to the point of abandonment.

The place Mauchen and its agricultural areas were completely afforested after the abandonment, which is unusual. Therefore the place is particularly suitable for archaeological structural investigations. In this way, the field corridors could be represented as a digital terrain model , taking into account the still existing vaulted bakers and step borders .
