Wall on Via Anelli
The wall on Via Anelli (also called Wall of Padua , Italian: Muro di Padova ) was a three meter high steel wall with a length of 84 meters in the Italian city of Padua . Since August 2006 it has enclosed the La Serenissima residential complex, which was originally built for students . Most recently it was mostly inhabited by African immigrants . It lies on the Via Luigi Anelli in mostly by immigrants inhabited quarter Stanga in Padova-Est.
The wall had checkpoints for the Carabinieri and surveillance cameras, was erected within two days and aroused international media interest. The city government justified the building of the wall as "the only short-term solution" to fight drug trafficking and crime. Opponents of this solution saw the city's action as a discriminatory ghettoization .
In 2008 the wall was torn down and all residents were housed in new accommodations.
