List of apple varieties

Maunzen or Maunzenapfel refers to an old German autumn apple variety . Due to its hardiness to frost, it found wide distribution in southern Germany after the severe winter of 1928/29. It is named after its discoverer, the tree species Maunzen, who found the variety as a chance seedling around 1900.

The fruits of this variety ripen from the middle to the end of September and can be used as cider apples and baking and cooking apples, but not as table apples. In principle, they can be kept until February, but the fruits are usually used immediately after harvesting, as they are in great demand due to their very high sugar and acid content.

It is a rather robust variety, suitable for high altitudes, with medium to strong growth that lasts into old age. The apple itself is rather small to medium-sized with pronounced ribs, which means that the fruit often looks angular. The yellowish white basic color adorns itself at maturity with red or pink stripes similar to the color of the petals, which are not completely white, but partly pink. The apple is very firm and juicy with pure white flesh, which is strongly sour and, when the tree is ripe, often tastes a little bitter.

The tree is only slightly susceptible to fruit tree cancer and fire blight , not at all to scab . It needs little maintenance and is extremely hardy. The crown is well built and spherical. Because of its excellent frost resistance, the variety was often used as a parent.

Like many other mass carriers, the variety has a strong tendency to alternate, despite professional pruning; in every other year there is often not a single apple on the tree. In the other years, however, the yields are often so high that the apples even cover the ground in two layers after shaking.
