Max Aronoff

Max Aronoff (born December 25, 1905 , † April 22, 1981 ) was an American violist and music teacher.

Aronoff was the first student to be admitted to the newly formed Curtis Institute of Music and in 1931 belonged to its first graduating class. He was taught by Carl Flesch and Louis Bailly, among others . From 1931 until his death he taught at the Curtis Institute . In 1943 he founded the New School of Music , which under his direction became a respected training center for orchestral musicians. As a music teacher, he shaped two generations of violists in the USA. The Max Aronoff Viola Institute was founded in his honor and memory . In addition, Aronoff was a member of the Curtis String Quartet for more than 50 years, performing in the US and Europe, at the White House and before Queen Elizabeth .
