from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Herre (born 1888 ; died 1956 ) was a German music writer .

Life

After studying musicology with Adolf Sandberger in Munich, Herre received his doctorate in 1924 on the operas of Franz Danzi . In March 1926 he joined the Augsburg Music Library and became its first librarian . Under his leadership, the cataloging and systematisation of tens of thousands of pieces of music took place within 8 months. On January 3, 1927, the music library opened on Heilig-Kreuz-Straße as part of the city conservatory. With the help of Herre, the music library changed in the following years from a simple sheet music collection to a comprehensive specialist library. An incendiary bomb finally hit the music library in February 1944 and destroyed almost the entire inventory.

In addition to his work in the music library, Herre published numerous essays on Augsburg's musical life and was concerned with composing pieces of music. At the end of the 1920s, Herre was a dramaturgical adviser to the Stadttheater Augsburg under the direction of Carl Häusler .
