The Max Perutz Labs Vienna (until 2019: Max F. Perutz Laboratories , MFPL ) are a joint research and training center of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna at the Vienna Biocenter . Around 450 employees from 40 nations work in the field of molecular biology at these two universities. They work in various areas of the life sciences: they examine both the structure of essential cell molecules and their role in developmental biology and in diseases. Research group leaders and employees of Max Perutz Labs train bachelor and master students from the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna as well as doctoral students from the University of Vienna in lectures and practical exercises.
Scientific profile
The basic research of the approx. 50 independent research groups focuses on the following areas:
- Immunity & Infection
- Cell Biology & Signaling
- Chromatin, RNA, and Chromosome Biology
- Computational Modeling of Biological Systems
- Developmental Dynamics
- Mechanisms of Human Disease
The scientific director of the Max Perutz Labs has been Alwin Köhler since March 2020. The other members of the directorate are Sascha Martens (University of Vienna), Christa Bücker (Vice Dean for Teaching of the University of Vienna), Thomas Leonard (Medical University of Vienna) and Fabien Martins (Director of Finance and Administration). From 2007 to March 2017, the Max F. Perutz Laboratories were headed by Graham Warren, from April 2017 to 2020 by the bioinformatician Arndt von Haeseler .
The Max Perutz Labs are regularly evaluated by a scientific advisory committee of internationally recognized researchers. The official report of this body contains feedback and suggestions on current developments and future strategic decisions.
education
The research group leaders and employees of Max Perutz Labs not only conduct research, but also see themselves as responsible for the education and training of new generations of scientists. Every year, they invest around 1200 hours of working time in training the next generation of academics before their doctorate.
financing
The Max Perutz Labs receive joint basic funding from the owner universities, which provide the premises and scientific infrastructure as well as the costs for administrative staff. Around 70 percent of the costs for the scientific staff as well as a large part of the running costs are financed from third-party funds (national and international research grants) that are acquired by the group leaders.
Naming
The Max Perutz Labs are named after the Vienna-born biochemist Max Ferdinand Perutz , who emigrated to England after studying chemistry at the University of Vienna. In Cambridge he was involved in founding the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. In 1962 he and John Kendrew received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their studies on the deciphering of the structure of globular proteins.
