Maxwell Technologies is an American manufacturer of supercapacitors ( ultracaps ) and capacitors for high voltages.

The first supercapacitor with low internal resistance for power applications was developed in 1982 for military applications by the Pinnacle Research Institute (PRI) and established on the market under the name PRI Ultracapacitor . In 1992 Maxwell Laboratories took over this development, a company founded in 1965 as a contractor to the US government. The BoostCaps that emerged from the development of PRI were the first electrochemical capacitors for power applications .

Maxwell Technologies was acquired by Tesla, Inc. in May 2019 .
