Niccoló Boldrini
Niccolò Boldrini (* beginning of the 16th century in Vicenza , Italy ; † after 1566 ) was an in Venice active woodcutter of the Renaissance . He gained fame through Titian , as his form cutter he was considered.
Titian's work as a mold cutter
Four woodcuts by Titian bear Boldrini's signature. However, only one, Venus and Cupid in the Forest from 1566, can be proven to be based on a model by Titian. After a detailed analysis of Boldrini's cutting technique, some of the works ascribed to him were removed from his oeuvre and assigned to Giovanni Britto , who was also a Cinquecento woodcutter . His caricature of the Laocoon group with monkeys as protagonists has become famous , probably also based on a model by Titian.
Giorgio Vasari reports on a direct collaboration between Titian and Boldrini , on the woodcut The Six Saints , for which Titian is said to have applied his original to the stick. However, a signature cannot be found on this work, on another work, Venus and Amor , which is not only signed but even clearly dated to 1566, is the inscription titianus inv / Nicolaus Boldrinus / Vicenti [n] us inci / debat . Registered in 1566 . This represents a direct connection between the wood cutter and the artist.
