Mayor Synagogue (right)

The Mayor Synagogue ( Mayor Sinagogu in Turkish ) is a former synagogue in the Hasköy district of Beyoğlu in Istanbul ( Turkey ).

According to the historian Lorans Tanatar Baruh, the synagogue was built in the Byzantine period and was called Maior ( Latin for greater ) because it was the largest in the district. Other sources, however, say that the synagogue was built by Jews from Mallorca 300 to 500 years ago . According to the historian Jak Deleon, there was still a Mayorka synagogue in Hasköy in the 1950s.

The synagogue is now used as a storage area, workshop house and billiard hall. In September 2009 the artist Serge Spitzer used the site for his installation work of art Molecular Istanbul .
