The McKinley Monument in front of Buffalo City Hall

The McKinley Monument is a 96  ft (29.3  m ) high obelisk on the Niagara Square in Buffalo in the US state of New York . The location of the monument in front of Buffalo City Hall defines the center of the city.

The monument was commissioned by the Carrère and Hastings architectural firm of New York State and inaugurated on September 6, 1907. It commemorates the 25th President of the United States , William McKinley , who was fatally wounded by a gunshot while visiting the Pan-American Exposition on September 6, 1901.

The building, for whose design Daniel Burnham was consulted as a consultant architect, essentially consists of a marble obelisk, the building material of which comes from Vermont and Italy . It is surrounded by lions made of Italian marble, 12 ft (3.7 m) long and each weighing 12 tons, designed by Alexander Phimister Proctor . Engraved is the poem Slants at Buffalo, New York, written by Carl Sandburg .
