Mebu
Mebu is short for M achines (gun) - E isen b eton u nterstand. This was a German field fortress during the First World War . It consisted of an underground room in which the crew was protected from enemy artillery fire , and provisions and ammunition were stored here . Stairs led from this room to the round, domed machine-gun shelters. A slit running around enabled an unlimited field of fire, so that it was also possible to target the enemy from the flank. In order to remain undiscovered for a long time, the shelters were later provided with retractable domes. So they were protected from fire by heavy artillery, which they would hardly have withstood. If the enemy stopped artillery fire to avoid hitting their own infantry, all one had to do was wait until the enemy was within range.
