Das Neue Universum is a German book series on children's and youth literature with topics from the areas of knowledge , research , adventure and entertainment . Apart from substantive issues published The New Universe and fictional texts, u. a. by Isaac Asimov , Hans Dominik and Michael K. Iwoleit . The choice of topic and content design are characterized by future , scientific and feasibility optimism . In the announced continuation of the series (2020) future and present topics with their light and dark sides should appear.

From 1880 one volume appeared annually. No volumes were published in 1943 and 1945 to 1947 (end of World War II and shortly thereafter ). The anniversary volume 75 appeared in 1958. In 1983, in the year of the anniversary volume 100, there was also a facsimile edition of the first volume from 1880, and the following year the second volume from 1881. In 2002, after 122 years, the last volume with number was published 119.

Volumes 1 to 11 (1880 to 1890) were published by W. Spemann Verlag , Stuttgart;
Volumes 12 to 90 (1891 to 1973) published by Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft , Stuttgart-Berlin-Leipzig;
volumes 91 to 119 (1974 to 2002) in Südwest-Verlag , Munich;
Volume 120 (2020) will be published by Carl-Hanser-Verlag , Munich.

The subtitle of the volumes was called u. a. A yearbook for home and family, especially for the more mature youth, with an appendix on self-employment "domestic workshop" . The subtitle of the yearbook was later A Yearbook of Knowledge and Progress , from 1970 (Volume 87) it was changed to Research, Knowledge, Entertainment. A yearbook , from 1985 (volume 102) it was called A yearbook for research, knowledge, entertainment . Volume 120 announced for 2020 has the subtitle Knowledge. Future. Adventure.

In the GDR a comparable series appeared under the name Urania Universum with annual editions. Special editions were offered as gifts for the youth consecration . The New Universe Volume 120 is also intended to continue the Urania Universe .

In 1986 there was an accompanying series, also published by Südwest-Verlag, under the title Library Das Neue Universum on special topics. The volumes Railway from A – Z , Aviation from A – Z , Nature Experiments in House and Garden , Traces in Nature and Automobiles from A – Z were published .
