Medal for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the GDR
The medal for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the GDR was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated in one stage on September 4, 1978 and was awarded once on the day the GDR was founded on October 7, 1979 . This medal was intended to honor the recognition and appreciation of active participation in the development, establishment and consolidation of the GDR in the early years 1945 to 1952 of those people who had helped to build the socialist German state during this period. The award of the medal could not only be given to citizens of the GDR, but also to other people from the brotherhood states.
Appearance and wearing style
The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 32 mm shows three people in the middle of its obverse ; on the left a representative of the intelligentsia of the GDR who is holding a model of the atom in his hands and in the middle a worker with a plan and spade in his hand as well as a helmet and protective goggles. On the far right you can see the picture of a cooperative farmer with a scarf and milk can in her hands. The people, who are separated by a crossbar at about belt height, stand in front of the silhouette of residential buildings (center), an industrial plant and two grain silos on the left. Under the crossbar, which has also been embossed, is the inscription: 1949.DDR.1979 . Above it are two small crossed laurel branches, each with three leaves. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the inscription in the center: FOR MERIT IN THE FOUNDATION AND STRENGTHENING OF THE GDR and a branch of laurel underneath.
The medal was worn on a 30 mm stylized black, red and gold loop covered with transparent plastic with a centrally placed 10 mm national coat of arms of the GDR. The interim clasp was the same as the ribbon.
