The medal for merits in fire protection was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated in one step on August 24, 1968. The medal could be awarded for outstanding achievements as well as personal bravery and selfless commitment in the fulfillment of the fire protection obligations and thus for the security of the national economy as well as the life, health and also the property of the citizen of the GDR. The awarding of the medal, which incidentally could be awarded several times, could not only be awarded to individuals, but also to collectives, departments, institutions and companies. Excellent fire departmentswere also entitled to attach the corresponding symbol of the medal to their devices and vehicles, e.g. B. as a sticker behind the windshield of the emergency vehicle.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 32 mm shows a raised embossed five-pointed star on its obverse , the inner circular area of ​​which is depicted recessed. In each of the spaces between the corner points there is a curved branch of laurel, a total of four. The fifth corner of the inscription: GDR filled in. In the inner, recessed circle mentioned, the embossed figure of a firefighter in full gear can again be seen, who is holding a fire hose in his hands. The recessed circular area is surrounded by a raised embossed ring that shows the inscription: FOR MERIT (above) and IM BRANDSCHUTZ (below). The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the GDR's national coat of arms. The medal was worn on a pentagonal pentagonal malino-red 24 mm wide clasp. The corresponding interim brace is of the same quality and 24 × 14 mm in size.
