Wolfgang Deurer was born into a family of builders. His father was the architect, conservator and cathedral builder Jakob Deurer (1898–1960).

Wolfgang Deurer's father was sent to Danzig in 1941 to head the Keibel assembly group ; his family, including his son Wolfgang, accompanied him. At the end of the war, the family was evacuated on a ship belonging to the German Navy. After a short stay in Berlin, the Deurer family moved to Cologne . As early as 1948, the father was commissioned to rebuild the Willibrordi Cathedral in Wesel . From 1951 to 1953, Wolfgang Deurer completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer at the cathedral builder there. After obtaining his journeyman's certificate, Wolfgang Deurer began studying civil engineering at the Cologne and Mainz University of Applied Sciences , which he completed in 1960. A second degree followed, this time in the field of art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . He later continued his father's work in Gdansk and received his doctorate in 1982 from the Technical University of Gdansk on historical and conservation problems in Gdansk church buildings.

Since 1961 he has been working as a freelance architect and master builder in monument conservation. In this role, he advises and leads renovation projects on historic buildings and gives specialist lectures at home and abroad.

In 2001 Wolfgang Deurer was given a teaching position at the Institute for Art History at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .
