Medal for Science and Art (Oldenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The medal for science and art of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was donated on June 11, 1861 by the Oldenburg sovereign Nicolaus Friedrich Peter (1827–1900), who had ruled alone since 1853 . The so-called “two-stage” medal was awarded either in gold or silver, without any more precise provisions or “statutes” being issued. The stamp was created by Rudolph Kölbel (1826–1910), court engraver and modeller in Oldenburg .

Only a few dozen of the - non-wearable - medals were awarded:

  • 1861 to 1903: 39 gold medals
  • 1903 to 1919, i.e. until the beginning of the Weimar Republic : 46 medals in silver, gold-plated

Well-known award winners

  • Franz Poppe , pseudonym Fresena (1834–1915), school principal, writer, local poet and editor
