MediaPortal is a free media center and includes a personal video recorder (PVR), a video and music player, a slide show and many other functions, such as weather forecast or the retrieval of trailers or music videos from the Internet. MediaPortal is one of the few Windows- based open source Mediacenter programs.

Media Portal can perform a large number of entertainment-related functions, similar to those of a special PVR system, such as recording, pausing and rewinding television images. Additional functions include watching videos, listening to music with dynamic playlists based on data from Last.fm, integrated games, recording the current radio program and viewing pictures as a slide show. MediaPortal has a plug-in system which enables the media center to be expanded personally.

Erwin Becker started the media center project in February 2004 after he had left the Xbox Media Center project (XBMC) in the development team.

Television reception is one of the elementary functions of the MediaPortal. In addition to the functionality of a normal receiver, the MediaPortal can record and play programs as well as display teletext and an electronic program guide ( EPG for short ). With the help of the EPG, programs can be recorded with just a few clicks.

Since MediaPortal contains a TV server, it can wake up the computer from standby mode and automatically record programmed programs on the hard drive.

From version 1.1.0 the transport stream format (with the file extension * .ts) is used for the recordings .

Videos & music

Another important feature is the management of a digital video and music collection. Information on films and pieces of music, such as description, user rating, images, etc., can be called up and displayed from the international or German film database .

Series

The management of TV series that have been recorded or copied from DVD is not one of the core functions of MediaPortal, but "MP-TVSeries" is one of the most popular plug-ins for MediaPortal with around 75,000 views. The plug-in calls up information on all episodes of a series from thetvdb.com (if these are not available in German, the English descriptions are used automatically).

photos

MediaPortal's photo management includes different views, slide shows with local background music or radio, zoom, rotation and other effects. A comfortable management of the albums with the remote control should be possible.

radio

In addition to the option of using the radio e.g. To receive e.g. via DVB-S, Mediaportal can also handle Internet streams.

Extensions

MediaPortal offers a comprehensive plug-in system. You can download and install these volunteer-developed extensions either from the MediaPortal download page or using the MediaPortal Extension Manager, although not all extensions for the MPI are available yet. Changes to the user interface ("skins"), the management of series and films as well as station logos for television operations are particularly popular.
