history

The foundation was a donation from the Swiss couple Rolf and Danuta Stäheli, who in 1987 donated a considerable part of their private collection to the then Institute for the History of Medicine and Pharmacy. In addition, the Society of Patrons of the Medical and Pharmaceutical History Collection supports the expansion of the collection financially and materially.

In addition to a representative selection of testimonials from the fields of medicine and pharmacy, the focus of the collection is on the preservation of testimonies to the history of the Kiel university clinics and the pharmaceutical institutes as well as the transmission of the medical and pharmaceutical history of Schleswig-Holstein. Another focus of the property portfolio is in the area of X-ray therapy and diagnostics.

Objects

The collection consists of a medical-historical and a pharmaceutical-historical part. The medical history section shows instruments and devices dating back to the 20th century, a selection of objects from ethno and folk medicine as well as personal care utensils. An internist practice with a treatment room, an X-ray room and a laboratory is intended to convey impressions of a doctor's visit in the first half of the 20th century. About 500 pathological and forensic medical preparations as well as an obstetric teaching collection on pathological pelvic deformities from the 19th century, which the Kiel obstetrician Gustav Adolf Michaelis compiled in the 1840s, provide an insight into the history of medical training at Kiel University . The collected basins provided the basis for Michaelis' work "The narrow basin" and the development of the theory of the Michaelis diamond . The area of war surgery, which was strongly influenced by the Kiel surgeon Friedrich von Esmarch in the second half of the 19th century, also has its place.

In the pharmacy history exhibition you will mainly find testimonials from privileged pharmacies in Schleswig-Holstein. Pharmacy jars, scales, devices for pre-industrial drug production and drugs are presented in historical pharmacy facilities.
