The Medical Central Library (MZB) is a department of the university library of the " Otto von Guericke University " Magdeburg and is located on the campus of the medical faculty, which also houses the university clinic .
Their task is to provide the students, researchers, employees and teachers of the university, the university clinic and other medically interested persons with literature, media and information as well as the accompanying support of patient care.

history

In 1959, a central scientific library for the Magdeburg Medical Academy was opened in the building of the central lecture hall. Before that, the construction of a textbook collection had already begun and smaller hand holdings were available in the institutes.

From this point on, the central library took over the acquisition and cataloging of the holdings of the entire academy. In the first ten years after the university was founded, the collection grew to a total of 26,991 volumes. In 1973 there were already 82,570 volumes. Since then, the library has been participating in interlibrary loaning and in 1969 was the first university library in the GDR to take on the tasks of a medical district library. She was therefore responsible for the technical guidance of the staff of the specialist libraries and for the international supply of literature and information.

The strong growth of the population made more spatial capacities necessary in the 1980s. With the completion of the new central kitchen including the cafeteria, the central library also got a new refuge in 1985. Gradually, the library was given more space in the cafeteria building.

In 1987 a cooperation between the central library and the Institute for Neurobiology and Brain Research of the Scientific Academy of the GDR was agreed. This agreement combined the holdings of some institute libraries of the Medical Academy Magdeburg with those of the Institute for Neurobiology to form the Common Library of Theoretical Institutes.

In the following year, a file-based database management system began with the computer-aided recording of the inventory. With the beginning of the 1990s and the political change, the technical equipment of the central library was modernized. Among other things, a CD-ROM server and a campus-internal PC network with a connection to the German research network were set up. In 1993, with the merger of three Magdeburg universities to form a full university, the central medical library was part of the university library and renamed the “Central Medical Library”. During this time the MZB started the interlibrary loan and the cooperative cataloging and subject indexing in the joint library network . In the course of the 1990s, the services and library work processes, for example the loan booking and magazine management of the MZB, were further automated. Among other things, a self-checkout machine and public internet workstations were added. In addition, the open access area was enlarged and an internet presence for the library was set up.

In the following decade, the electronic offers of the MZB expanded. In addition, the number of reading places has been increased, the technical equipment has been renewed, cashless payment transactions for prints and copies have been introduced, Internet use has been made possible for private notebooks and opening times have been extended. The library has been organizing public readings and exhibitions on a regular basis since 2006.

From 2012, further individual workplaces and four group work rooms for POL (problem-oriented learning) were created through construction work, and the library was further modernized. Since then, electronic exams have been held in the reading room during exam time. The MZB is represented on social media (Facebook, Twitter).

Existence and use

The MZB works on the principle of the “hybrid library”. This means "the integration of digital and non-digital resources and services in a real space and the creation of the technical infrastructure for the 24/7 use of online media."

The MZB makes media and literature available both in the traditional sense, i.e. physically in the library and for lending, as well as digitally and therefore regardless of location. In 2010 the MZB had around 243,000 printed books and magazines, 25,500 e-journals, 1,500 e-books and databases and around 3,700 other media.

In addition to students and members of the university, people who have reached the age of 16 and who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany are permitted to use it.

Branches

The MZB Magdeburg has various branches in institutes and clinics of the medical faculty and the university clinic.
In addition, the library of the training center for health professions in Magdeburg is part of the central medical library.
