Medon (Archon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Medon ( Greek  Μέδων ) is in Greek mythology the eldest son of Kodros , the king of Attica . When his father died, his brother Neileos wanted to contest him for the throne. As an argument of his claim he used that a disabled person (Medon was lame) should not become king. An inquiry was then sent to Delphi . The oracle decided that Medon should become ruler. Neileos was sent to Ionia to establish a colony there.

The Eupatrids used the controversy for the throne to abolish the monarchy - so Medon did not become king, but the first archon for life.

His son Akastos was elected second archon for life after him.
