Mehrdad ( Persian مهرداد; [mɛhrdɑːd]) is a male Persian given name . The first name is often given by all Iranian ethnic groups.

Some kings of the Persian Empire have borne this name. The original form of this name is Mithradata , Mithradates or Mithridates and means gift from the sun . Mithra , the god of light, was a mediator between good and evil among Indo-Aryan peoples. He was the God of truth, justice and war at the same time. His name has three meanings: friend, light, love. The first syllable of this given name ( Mehr dad) is the neo-Persian form of Mithra or Mithras .
