Mehrdad Mostofizadeh (born April 30, 1969 in Bad Gandersheim ) is a German politician ( Alliance 90 / The Greens ). He has been a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2010 and was chairman of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group from March 2015 to May 2017.

Life

Mostofizadeh was born the son of an Iranian and a German. He passed his Abitur in 1988 and then did community service . From 1990 to 2003 he studied law , social sciences and English at the universities of Essen and Bochum , but without obtaining a degree. During and after his studies, he worked from 1990 to 1994 and again from 1997 to 2009 in the field of elderly care for the workers' welfare organization in Essen .

Mostofizadeh has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 1988. From 1991 to 1992 he was managing director of the Essen council group and from 1995 to 1996 managing director of the Witten council group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. From 1993 to 1994 he was treasurer of the party's Essen district association. He has held this position again since 2012.

From 2001 to 2010 he worked as a research assistant for the parliamentary group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in Düsseldorf , initially for the study commission "Future of Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia", later for the areas of budget and finance (from 2005), as well as for the municipal area (from 2009). At the same time, he was a research assistant at the Bundestag member Bärbel Höhn from 2006 to 2010 .

Mostofizadeh initially worked in local politics and was a member of the district council in Essen's city district VIII Ruhr peninsula from 1989 to 1994 and from 2005 to 2009. From 1994 to 2010 he was councilor of the city of Essen and there spokesman for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group for ten years. He was also a member of the Ruhr Regional Association from 2005 to 2010 . His focus was on budget, financial and sports policy.

In the state elections in May 2010 he ran as a direct candidate in the Essen IV state electoral district and took third place with 11.6% of the first votes . He then moved through the state list of his party as a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the 15th electoral term he was a member of the Standing Committee until the state parliament was dissolved on March 14, 2012. Within the parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen he was a member of the parliamentary committee (deputy chairman) and spokesman for the areas of local politics as well as budget and finances.

In the following state election in May 2012 , Mostofizadeh ran again as a direct candidate in the Essen IV constituency. He received 10.2% of the first vote, after which he moved back into parliament via a list. In the 16th electoral term, until his election as parliamentary group chairman, he was again a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee (deputy parliamentary group chairman) and spokesman for budget and finance. He was also a member of the main committee and the council of elders. He is also a member of the parliamentary advisory board of NRW.BANK .

On March 6, 2015, he was elected leader of the Greens with 15 votes; his competitor Monika Düker received 14 votes. He replaced Reiner Priggen , who had no longer stood for election.

After the Greens lost votes in the state elections in May 2017 (−4.9%), in which he entered parliament via the state list, he made his position as group leader available. He was replaced by the newly installed dual leadership Monika Düker / Arndt Klocke and elected deputy chairman of the parliamentary group. Since the beginning of the 17th legislative period, he has been the spokesman for the Committee on Labor, Health and Social Affairs and the spokesman for the Committee on Home, Local Affairs, Building and Housing.

Mehrdad Mostofizadeh has been married since 1995 and has three children.
