The Meikleour Beech Hedge is a hedge in Perth and Kinross , Scotland . Located north of Perth , near the village of Meikleour , it extends along the A93 . With a height of up to 36 meters, it has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest hedge in the world since 1966. At the same time, it is considered the longest hedge in Great Britain with a length of 530 meters . It is made up of a series of beeches known as beech in the English language .
The history of the hedge is linked to the nearby Meikleour House estate, built by Robert Murray Nairne and his wife Jean Mercer in 1734. They then had the hedge planted in 1745. Both were followers of the Jacobites . After he died in the Battle of Culloden in 1746 , she had to leave her estate and flee to Edinburgh . But she decreed that the hedge must be preserved as a memory of her husband. The hedge is now maintained by the Meikleour Trust, which also manages Meikleour House and the associated lands.
