The first season is based on the first volume of the four-part bestseller series by Elena Ferrante of the same name . The book has been translated into 42 languages and sold over 5 million times. The first airing of the first season was on US-American television on November 18, 2018 on HBO , the first release of the second season, based on the second volume of the Neapolitan saga , took place in Italy on Rai 1 on February 10, 2020. In Germany, the series has been available on MagentaTV since May 2019 .

Elena Greco learns that her best friend Lila Cerullo has disappeared without a trace. They have had a special relationship for decades. She takes the disappearance as an opportunity to put the life story of the two on paper. Their intense friendship begins in Naples in the 1950s during school days.
