Meinhard Adler (born October 6, 1937 in Eichsfeld ) is a German neuroscientist and author . He lives in Kastellaun .

Life

Adler studied Russian and sports in Leipzig from 1955 to 1957, and from 1957 to 1964 medicine, psychology and anthropology in Göttingen, Erlangen and Mainz. He taught as a specialist in psychiatry and professor of physiological psychology in Berlin, and for curative psychiatry in Cologne. His main areas of work are biological psychiatry, scientific methodology and cultural psychiatry.

Positions

Adler does not narrow the field of application of psychiatry to purely "spiritual" experience and its therapeutic influence, but emphasizes that every behavior, thinking and feeling is tied to an organic switching point in the brain and can be influenced by psychosurgery.

In “Coping with the Past in Germany”, Adler examines the psychological and social processing of National Socialism after 1945 and GDR socialism after 1989. The post-fascist and post-communist "processing" has by no means freed itself from the spell of these total ideologies, but remains tied to them with their fear of return and the hatred from the victims' aggression.

Following Charles Percy Snow , Adler assumes two cultures : "a scientific one, which ideologues can only with difficulty talk about their fantasies about human nature, and a humanities-philosophical one". This “perceives empirical results about people only if they fit into their ideological stuff. It 'does not focus on the breadth and diversity of inductive knowledge and its well-founded methodology, but rather on a quasi-extract of' views 'on this and above all normative drafts' of how humans should be: a philosophical anthropology. On the other hand, a 'scientific ethics' should be based on the knowledge of people as they actually are. "
