Master of the Barbarigo reliefs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Italian bronze artist and marble sculptor of the Italian Renaissance is known as the master of the Barbarigo reliefs .

The artist, not known by name, was active between 1486 and 1515. It got its emergency name after three bronze reliefs that had adorned an altar of the church S Maria della Carita in Venice . This was donated by the family of Doge Agostino Barbarigo . The altar was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. Some other fragments of it, such as a marble figure of the Doge, have been preserved. The altar was part of his family grave. The Doge died in 1515, documents show work on the altar after 1486, which limits the creative period of the master of the Barbarigo reliefs.

The eponymous reliefs are now in the Galleria Franchetti, Ca 'd'Oro in Venice, the statue of the Doge in a church there. The sculpture collection in Berlin owns a large number of other well-known works by the master of the Barbarigo reliefs .
