Herbert Schwiegk

Herbert Schwiegk (born March 23, 1906 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ; † March 2, 1988 ) was a German internist , university professor and cardiovascular researcher.

Life

After completing his school career, Schwiegk studied medicine at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg from 1924 to 1929 . Schwiegk doctorate in 1929 with the published 1930 dissertation The influence of carbon dioxide breathing and hyperventilation on the blood velocity of man Dr. med. After completing his studies, Schwiegk initially worked as an assistant doctor and later as a senior physician at the Charité's 2nd medical clinic in Berlin. Schwiegk completed his habilitation in 1936 with the text The disorders of the nervous circulatory regulation (with special consideration of the pulmonary circulation) .

Schwiegk was a member of the SA from 1933 and joined the NSDAP in 1937. In addition, he belonged to the NS organizations NSV , NS-Lehrerbund and the NS-Dozentbund . During the Second World War , Schwiegk was assigned to the Military Medical Academy , where he worked at the Institute for Physiological and Defense Chemistry . Schwiegk took part in the conference on medical questions in distress at sea and winter death on October 26 and 27, 1942, where a lecture was also given on the "attempts at hypothermia" in the Dachau concentration camp . The investigations of Schwiegk and Wassili Wassiljewitsch Parins led to the discovery of the Parin-Schwiegk reflex .

After the war ended, Schwiegk worked as a senior physician at the Medical Polyclinic from 1946 to 1951, and from 1948 was also an adjunct professor at Heidelberg University . Schwiegk then moved to the University of Marburg as a professor of internal medicine , where he was also head of the University Polyclinic. From 1956 Schwiegk was a full professor of internal medicine at the University of Munich , where he in turn also headed the 1st Medical University Clinic.

Schwiegk was editor or co-editor of the Klinische Wochenschrift , the central congress newspaper for all internal medicine of the journal for total. experimental medicine and the manual of internal medicine . In 1987 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
