Master of the Dormition of Terni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of the Dormition of Terni ( Italian Maestro della Dormition di Terni) one is medieval painter called, of about 1,370 to 1,410 in Umbria worked in Italy. The artist, who is not known by name, is named after the fresco that he painted in the church of San Pietro in Terni and that depicts the coronation of Mary and furthermore the death of Mary among the apostles, the so-called dormition .

The master is said to have painted numerous other frescoes in Umbria, for example a Madonna Enthroned with Child in the Church of San Gregorio Maggiore in Spoleto or a similar picture there on an outside portal of the Church of San Nicolò. The latter can be dated to 1404 according to an inscription. Some altarpieces are also assigned to the master.

The triptych of a Madonna with Child and two saints, which comes from the Church of San Cleto in Terni and can now be found there in the Pinacoteca Comunale , is often attributed to the master . According to another opinion, however, this work can be ascribed to a successor to the master, the Maestro del Trittico di Terni, who was then also named with a makeshift name.

It is suggested that the master of the Dormition of Terni could be identical to Domenico da Miranda, an artist documented from 1369, who then worked in Spoleto in 1395 and 1404.
