The master of the legend of St. George is an emergency name with which a complex of works of late Gothic panel paintings, which was probably created in Cologne between 1465 and 1490 and takes up suggestions from the Dutch Ars Nova, is referred to . It is named after a multi-figure altarpiece with depictions of the legend of St. George . In close spatial, temporal and stylistic connection there are other panel paintings, which are referred to under the emergency names Master of the Lyversberg Passion and Master of the Life of Mary . It is unclear how many artists and workshops are involved. The artists had a decisive influence on the art production of the Cologne School of Painting during their active time.

Identification attempts

In 1902, the art historian Carl Aldenhoven suggested identifying the master of the legend of St. George with the painter Johann van Stockem, who can be traced back to Cologne from 1453 to 1465. This has remained an unproven hypothesis.

The George altar

Gregor's Mass

The George altar of the master of the George legend was made around 1460/65 and can be seen in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne. When open, this work has no compositional or central content center. In contrast to other altarpieces of the same epoch, the chronological arrangement of the individual images makes the work a pure picture narration, without the usual central image of religious veneration. Only a special interpretation of the picture lines shows that one can imagine an altar cross in front of the picture, which in the overall composition with the altar picture could give such a religious focus in a tangible dimension ("3D"). As in other pictures attributed to him, the painter shows spatial experiences in a realistic, comprehensible narrative style.
