Research priorities

Höltgen's scientific interest was initially in the work of Else Lasker-Schüler . His Bonn dissertation from 1955 represented a new approach to the literary interpretation of the work of the Jewish poet. Especially in his analysis of the poem An old Tibetan carpet he drew attention to the importance of the carpet in Lasker-Schüler's complete works and made comparisons with other works by the German and European literature. For example, Höltgen names the poem Auf eine Lampe by Eduard Mörike , the famous poem Carpet of Life by Stefan George and John Keats ' Ode on a Grecian Urn as possible models .

In the field of English literature, Höltgen was particularly concerned with literature from the 16th century to the beginning of the 18th century. These included the works of John Milton , Robert Burton and the poems of the Metaphysical Poets . Höltgen was considered a specialist in emblematic literature and published, among other things, a study on Francis Quarles under the title Aspects of the Emblem .

Höltgen was an advisory co-editor of the DFG project “Complete Edition of the Works of Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftesbury ” , led by Erwin Wolff . He published several books of his own and numerous scientific articles, mainly on English poetry.

In 1999 he received the "Albert W. Fields Award" from the American magazine Explorations in Renaissance Culture for the best article of 1998; his article Clever Dogs and Nimble Spaniels : Invention and Imagination also contained illustrations, some of which came from the old holdings of the University Library Erlangen .
