Master of the Munich Legenda Aurea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of the Munich Legenda aurea (sometimes also Master of the Golden Legend ) is a miniature painter who worked in medieval Paris from 1430 to 1440. Since his name remains unknown, he was given an emergency name after the more than 200 miniatures that illustrate a manuscript (BSB Cod. Gall. 3) that is now in the Bavarian State Library in Munich. These are images from the “Legende de nos seigneurs les Saincts du Paradis”, a French translation of the Legenda Aurea .

The style of the master is characterized e.g. B. by using lines to highlight facial expressions. In addition to the Munich Legenda aurea, this style can be found in other miniatures assigned to this master, but also mainly in the works of his students.

It is possible that the master of the Munich Legenda Aurea can establish a relationship with the Bedford master and the master of Dunois , who were both flourishing as illuminators in Paris at the time .
