Master of the Saint Louis Madonna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of Saint Louis-Madonna ( Engl. Master of the St. Louis Madonna ) is a painter of the Italian early Renaissance refers to the 1475-1500 was about working in Florence.

The master of the Saint Louis Madonna , whose name is not known for certain , was given his emergency name from an altarpiece that he painted around 1486. It depicts the Madonna and Child , Saint Archbishop Louis of Toulouse and the Apostle Thomas as well as the donors of the picture and can be found today in the Saint Louis Art Museum .

Works

Numerous other works have been and are ascribed to the master of the Saint Louis Madonna , including works in well-known museums that are often discussed in art history, such as the Coronation of Mary with Saints in the Keresztény Múzeum in Esztergom, a Madonna with Child and Angels in the Courtauld Gallery in London or a Madonna with Child and Saints in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. At auctions, works are presented and auctioned under the name of the master. However, it remains controversial which of the works ascribed to the master originate solely from his hand or which is a joint work or the work of another from the workshop of well-known painters such as Domenico Ghirlandaio , Neri di Bicci or Sebastiano Mainardi . Therefore, an exact catalog of works by the master of the Saint Louis Madonna remains controversial.

identification

Various proposals were made to identify the painter of the picture of the Madonna in St. Louis by name, until an equation of this painter with Davide Ghirlandaio, made in early art history, was partially accepted. Davide was a brother of Domenico Ghirlandaio and probably worked in his workshop or environment in Florence. However, whether the image of the Madonna in Saint Louis actually originates from him remains controversial, which is why the independent personality of a master of the Saint Louis Madonna continues to be suggested and examined in art history .
