Master of the Ulrich legend

Legend of St. Ulrich (around 1450)

As a master of Ulrich Legend or Ulrich Meister one is Gothic painter called that after 1450 probably in Augsburg worked. The artist, who is not known by name, gets his emergency name after two pictures he created with depictions from the legend of St. Ulrich , patron saint of Augsburg. The works painted on wooden panels can be found there on the north wall of the transept in the St. Ulrich and Afra basilica and represent, among other things, the fish miracle of St. Ulrich . As one of the pictures probably depicts the interior of the Romanesque predecessor church of St. Ulrich and Afra, which was destroyed in 1474, they were taken before this point in time. The back of the pictures is unpainted, so they were probably intended as wall cladding.

The composition of the scenes and, for example, the clothing of the figures in the pictures of the Ulrich legend indicate the influence of Burgundian illuminators . The master of the Ulrich legend was also familiar with contemporary painting from Flanders . Until the middle of the 15th century, the influence of Bohemian painting had mainly determined the development of this art direction in Augsburg. However, after 1455, works by Dutch painters could be found in Augsburg, and Dutch painters settled in the city around this time. Even if not directly verifiable, it can be assumed that Dutch models such as Rogier van der Weyden were also important for the master of the Ulrich legend . Whether the unknown master was a Dutchman temporarily staying in Augsburg is controversial.

The assignment of a few other works to the master of the Ulrich legend is also controversial , such as the portrait of a man ( portrait of the town clerk ) in the Kunstmuseum Basel or preparatory work for another portrait in the Bavarian State Painting Collection . There is no connection, sometimes suggested, between the early works of Hans Holbein and those of the master of the Ulrich legend.
