Master of the Aspelt Monument: Grave monument of Archbishop Peter von Aspelt in the Mainz Cathedral

The medieval stonemason , who created the grave monument for Archbishop of Mainz Peter von Aspelt around 1320 , is called the master of the Aspelt monument . This sandstone plate is designed in the high Gothic style and shows the archbishop at the coronation of three kings. The picture is constructed in the style of contemporary book illumination . With the slender framing of the scene carved in stone by a filigree border, the master's work is an example of the adoption of architectural decor from church construction into gothic cabaret. The work may have been influenced by engraved stone and metal tombstones from the era in France.

The grave slab is located in the Mainz Cathedral, with its painting renewed in the 19th century . Through their design, the master of the Aspelt monument influenced similar grave monuments and perhaps also other bas-reliefs in the closer and wider surroundings of Mainz.
