As a Master of the Saint Augustine Altarpiece one is late Gothic painter from Nuremberg called. He received his emergency name after the pictures he and his workshop painted around 1487 for a St. Vitus altar for the Nuremberg Augustinian Hermit Church . According to current considerations, the painter is identified with the Speyer native Hans Traut , who acquired Nuremberg citizenship in 1477 and died in 1487.

Name distinction

The name Master of the Augustinian Altar , first given to the master in art history , is ambiguous, which is why other names such as “Master of the St. Vitus Altar” are sometimes used today.

History of the Augustinian Altar

First a side altar, the master's St. Vitus Altar was used as the main altar after 1590. After the church was demolished in 1816, the pictures finally came into the possession of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. The carved part of the altar is lost.

The Nuremberg Augustinian altar shows the collaboration of various painters; the picture signed with RF and other panels are currently attributed to Rueland Frueauf the Elder , who was then an independent workshop manager in Passau .
