As a Berthold master or master of the Berthold sacramentary ( English Master of the Berthold Missal ), a book illuminator of the 13th century is referred to in art history . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from the magnificent full-page illustrations that he created around 1215 for a manuscript for Weingarten Monastery . His pictures for this manuscript, named after its client Berthold, Abbot von Weingarten 1200 to 1232, as the Berthold Sacramentary , are considered to be one of the most important examples of medieval illumination. The master himself is regarded as a significant, independent and influential artist of late Romanesque .

The Berthold-Meister combined in a unique way the style of Carolingian book illumination , which was still prevalent in the book illumination of his time, with elements of book illumination from Northern Europe, which were made over Weingarten by copies of works from the Maas-Mosel through the patronage of the noble family of the Welfen -Room as well as were known from England in the monastery; his pictures assimilate the golden splendor of Byzantine painting and replace their formulaic representation with a dynamic mobility in the figure representation. Nevertheless, the traditional iconography of his era can be seen in the master's pictures, as used by other painters of his time.

In addition to the sacramentary, the Berthold Master is assigned a few illustrations for other manuscripts, such as B. the painting of a cantatorium.
