Sports champion of the Soviet Union

The Sports Master of the Soviet Union ( Russian Мастер спорта СССР ) was a sports title that was introduced in 1935 by the Supreme Council for Physical Culture under the CIK of the USSR . The title was awarded to athletes of the USSR for meeting performance standards. The title has not been awarded since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. On January 1, 1975 over 108,100 and in 1988 around 250,000 athletes wore this title. A Soviet chess title was established earlier.

In Russia today there is the title of Sports Champion of Russia .
