Meister von 1518: Presentation in the temple. 16th Century. Privately owned

The emergency name for a Flemish artist who is not known by name and who painted the scene of the Annunciation of the Antwerp reredos in the Marienkirche in Lübeck is given as Meister from 1518 . The double-winged altar carved on the inside, which can be found in the Marientide Chapel, shows this picture of the Annunciation by the master when closed. The year 1518 can be found on the altar, after which the painter received his emergency name . The further unsigned work in Lübeck was donated in 1522 by the merchant Johann Bone for the chapel.

In addition to the picture in Lübeck, the master from 1518 was assigned other works by comparing styles. He and his works are also associated with names such as Jan van Dornicke , Jan Mertens or Jan Gossaert in different ways . Also Pieter Coecke is called. Thus some of his pictures can possibly be assigned to a workshop of these artists. It is also believed that the master of 1518 is identical to the master of Dilighem Abbey .

The master from 1518 is assigned to the Antwerp Mannerists , an art-historical group of members of the Antwerp St. Luke's Guild at the beginning of the 16th century. His pictures usually show religious scenes in which Gothic figures are still depicted in spectacular Renaissance architecture. The master may have used woodcuts by Dürer as templates for some of the pictures . In addition to the realistic and lively narrative style of the figures often shown in rich clothing, which is also typical of other Antwerp Mannerists, the work of the master from 1518 is characterized by a particularly lively coloring and a special sense for the delicate structuring of the picture content.
