Alex Melamid

Alex Melamid (originally Russian Александр Данилович Меламид / Alexander Danilowitsch Melamid ; born July 14, 1945 in Moscow ) is an American artist .

Life

Melamid attended the Moscow Art Academy (1958–1960) and the Stroganov Institute for Art and Design (1962–1967).

Since 1965, Melamid worked with Vitaly Komar . Both initiated Soz Art , the Soviet counterpart to Pop Art . Together they were the first Russian artists to take part in a documenta at documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987 .

Melamid also became politically active against the system of the Soviet Union , left the country via Israel and later took on US citizenship.
