Melanimon tibiale is a beetle from the family of black beetles (Tenebrionidae). The species is the only representative of the genus Melanimon in Central Europe.

features

The matt black beetles are 3–4 mm long. The short antennae have club-shaped end links. The laterally rounded pronotum is as wide as the base of the wing cover. The roughly dotted pronotum has 5 smooth spots. Two raised longitudinal ribs run over the wing covers. The wing covers enclose the entire abdomen. The front rails are greatly widened.

distribution

Melanimon tibiale is a Palearctic species. It is widespread in Europe. In the north they occur as far as Scandinavia and Great Britain. The species is absent on the Iberian Peninsula. In the east, its range extends to Central Asia and Siberia.

Way of life

The adult beetles can be seen in May and June. The beetle species prefers dry sandy soils, especially coastal and inland dunes, as a biotope. Melanimon tibiale is often found in the same habitat as the somewhat larger black beetle species Opatrum sabulosum .
