Melchior Ludolf Herold (* 10. December 1753 in Rüthen , † 31 August 1810 in Hoinkhausen ) was a German hymn composer and priest .

Life

Herold was born in 1753 as the third of seven children. At the age of 27 he moved to Hoinkhausen, where he worked as a priest and renovated the rectory at his own expense. Herold took great care of the school system; In 1784, for example, he separated boys and girls. In 1786 he introduced the industrial school in his country. In 1814 there were 231 Heroldian schools in the Duchy of Westphalia . In addition, he became a "fatherly friend" and mentor of his colleague Friedrich Adolf Sauer , pastor and school reformer in nearby Rüthen. In 1808 he suffered a stroke and died two years later.
