Melissa Silverstein

Melissa Silverstein is an American feminist activist, journalist, and blogger who works to empower women in the film industry. She is the founder of the Women and Hollywood website and co-founder and artistic director of the Athena Film Festival at Barnard College . She has also contributed to numerous prestigious publications such as Forbes.com , The Guardian and Bloomberg . She lives and works in New York.

Life and work

education

Melissa Silverstein grew up on Long Island and studied American Studies at Brandeis University in Waltham from 1985 to 1989 . After completing her bachelor's degree, she studied theater management at Columbia University , where she graduated with a master's degree in 1993.

Work for non-profit organizations

Melissa Silverstein worked for various feminist non-profit organizations after completing her training. She was Chief of Staff of the Ms Foundation for Women and worked from 1998 to 2002 for The White House Project , which works for the empowerment of women in American politics and business. From 2006 to 2012 she wrote numerous articles for the Womens Media Center and she was a correspondent for WMC life . She is also the envoy for the American Film Showcase , a program that organizes screenings and workshops with American filmmakers around the world. She has also worked on educational campaigns like Take Our Daughters to Work Day . She is also a member of NY Women in Film and TV .

Women and Hollywood

In 2007 Melissa Silverstein founded her own website Women and Hollywood . There she publishes articles and interviews about women in the American film industry and reports on their projects and working conditions. The motto of the website is “Educates, Advocates, and Agitates for Gender Diversity and Inclusion in Hollywood and the Global Film Industry” (educates, advocates and advocates for gender diversity and inclusion in Hollywood and the global film industry). The website made it in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 on the list of 100 Best Websites for Women by ForbesWoman . In addition, it was named the Best Hollywood Blog by total.film in 2009. For the anniversary in 2017, Women and Hollywood held events in New York, Los Angeles and London. In addition, Melissa Silverstein manages her own YouTube channel, which is thematically linked to her website.

Athena Film Festival

In 2010, Melissa Silverstein and Kathryn Kolbert founded the Athena Film Festival at Barnard College, which has taken place annually since then. The festival shows films by both female and male directors in which women play the leading roles and who deal with feminist issues.

Women and Hollywood was also commissioned to market the film Lady Bird by Greta Gerwig on social media.

In 2010 Melissa Silverstein was one of the 10 film critics to follow on Twitter according to Flavorwire and in 2011 she was among the Top 100 Arts Tweeters by the Times of London . She received the 2013 Susan B. Anthony Award from the NYC Chapter of the National Organization for Women . In 2016 she received the Marie C. Wilson Emerging Leader Award from the Ms. Foundation for Women . 2018 she was on the New Power of New York List of Variety .

Philosophy and demands

Melissa Silverstein explicitly describes herself as a feminist. As such, she advocates more women in the American film industry. Since 50% of the film audience is women, she calls for female filmmakers to be represented in Hollywood. She takes an intersectional approach and criticizes the lack of Afro-American filmmakers in the film industry. She regards pop culture as an influential platform to reach many people and to sensitize them to the issue of social equality between women and men. Melissa Silverstein advocates the inclusion of men and male filmmakers in feminist debates.
