Mellt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mellt is a legendary figure from the Welsh four branches of the Mabinogi and the Welsh triads .

Mellt does not appear in the myths as his own legendary figure, but only as the father of Mabon from Mellt . It is unclear whether this is also Mabon fab Modron . In this case, Mellt would also be husband of the Modron.

Etymologically Mellt to be kymrische mellt ( "Blitz", with the Indo-European root * meldhna ) returned and could thus even be no independent legendary figure, but indicate a mystic origin of son Mabon. Ifor Williams, on the other hand, sees the meaning "mild, gentle" in the name due to the Indo-European root * meldo . This in turn allows conclusions to be drawn about the Irish Mag Mell , the level of joy, a place in the Celtic Otherworld .
