Modron

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Modron ferch Afallach [ 'modron verx a'vałax ] ("Modron, daughter of Afallach") or Madrun is an old mother goddess and legendary figure from the Celtic mythology of Wales in western Great Britain.

Modron is the daughter of Afallach and is also mentioned in the Trioedd Ynys Prydein ("The Welsh Triads") as the mother of Owein fab Urien and Morfudd ferch Urien , whose father is said to have been the historical King Urien of Rheged in the 6th century . Modron's son Mabon is robbed three days after he is born. Mabon plays an important role in Mal y kavas Kulhwch Olwen ("How Kulhwch Olwen Conquered") after Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have freed him from captivity in Gloucester to help the men, the boar Twrch Trwyth to kill.

An older form of the name with inscriptions is Matrona as a collective name for a type of Celtic mother goddess, as well as the name of the river goddess Matrona in France. The version as Madrun can still be found in some place names, for example Carn Vadrun on the Pwllheli peninsula in north-west Wales. The spring shrine St. Madruns Well near the town of Penzance in Cornwall in south-west England commemorates a Christian saint of this name .
