Melocactus braunii grows with dull dark green, spherical to somewhat flat conical shoots that reach heights of 7 to 8 centimeters with diameters of 11 to 15 centimeters. The lowest radial spike has a length of up to 1.8 centimeters, while the lateral 1 to 1.4 centimeters and the upper 0.4 to 0.8 centimeters long. The small cephalium , made of white wool and reddish bristles, grows up to 4 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 6 centimeters.
