Melocactus braunii is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet braunii honors the German agronomist and specialist in Brazilian cacti Pierre Josef Braun .

description

Melocactus braunii grows with dull dark green, spherical to somewhat flat conical shoots that reach heights of 7 to 8 centimeters with diameters of 11 to 15 centimeters. There are 13 straight ribs , rarely 10 or more, which are 3 to 3.5 centimeters wide and 2 centimeters high at the base of the shoot. Eight to nine slightly sunken areoles are formed per rib , which are 1.5 centimeters apart. The initially reddish-brown and later light pink-gray thorns have a reddish-brown tip. The single central spine is curved upwards and about 1 centimeter long. The radial spines are curved like claws or spiders towards the shoot. The lowest radial spike has a length of up to 1.8 centimeters, while the lateral 1 to 1.4 centimeters and the upper 0.4 to 0.8 centimeters long. The small cephalium , made of white wool and reddish bristles, grows up to 4 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 6 centimeters.

The pink flowers are 1.7 to 2.1 inches long. The club-shaped, pink-colored fruits are 1.7 centimeters long and about 8 millimeters in diameter.
