Holotype

Melocactus lanssensianus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Belgian cactus expert Etienne Lanssens .

description

Melocactus lanssensianus grows with gray-green, depressed spherical bodies that reach heights of up to 8 centimeters and a diameter of up to 14 centimeters. There are usually 12 sharp-edged ribs . The strong thorns are more or less pink-gray to brownish to yellowish. The single central spine is curved upwards and 3 to 3.5 inches long. The 7 to 11 recurved radial spines reach lengths of 3.5 to 4 centimeters. The cephalium , formed from light red to salmon-colored bristles , is up to 2.5 centimeters high and has a diameter of 7 centimeters.

The flowers are cleistogamous, that is, they stay closed and are self-fertile. The fruits are pink in color and up to 1.7 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus lanssensianus is distributed in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco . It was first described in 1986 by Pierre Josef Braun .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002 the species as "was Data Deficient (DD) " d. H. with insufficient data. In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered.
