Melocactus paucispinus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet paucispinus means 'with few spines'.
description
Melocactus paucispinus grows with gray-green, strongly depressed either hemispherical or disc-shaped bodies that reach heights of 7 to 12 centimeters and diameters of 15 to 19 centimeters. The bodies are often partially buried in the sand. There are 9 to 10 ribs . A central spine is missing. The 3 to 6 recurved, gray radial spines have a darker tip and are between 2 and 3.2 centimeters long. The lowest radial thorn is the longest. The cephalium , made of creamy white wool and fine, more or less pink-red bristles , is 3 to 6 centimeters high and 7 to 8 centimeters in diameter.
The deep pink flowers are 1.8 to 2.6 centimeters long and 0.9 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The fruits are light lilac pink and 1.4 to 1.9 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus paucispinus is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia .
The first description was in 1983 by G. Heimen and RJ Paul.
Melocactus paucispinus is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002 it was called " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. classified as endangered. In 2013 the species is known as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered.
